Did you know that avocado is actually a fruit? Some say it’s like the superman/woman of food. It is one of the most nutrient-dense fruits in the market. This fruit is rich in folate, fibre, magnesium, vitamin E, and potassium. It is proven to 'avo' lots of benefits for us humans, but can I make an avo toast for my pup? Well, not a good idea…

Avocados have a compound called “Persin”. It is a natural anti-fungal compound that is produced in the plant. Persin is present in the fruit, skin, seeds, and leaves. The levels of persin present in avocados differ in different types of avocados.

According to veterinarians, dogs and cats are resistant to this compound. However, if your furry one has a sensitive digestive system, even a tiny amount of persin can cause harm to him or her. It can induce vomiting, diarrhoea, and myocardial damage (disrupting the functions of the heart). Therefore, veterinarians recommend keeping your pooch far ‘avo-y’ from it!

That’s not all, there are a few more reasons to why an avo is a big no-no for your pet!

A pup’s digestive system cannot digest the avocado’s seed also known as the pit of an avocado. If consumed, there are higher chances that it might cause a gastric or an intestinal blockage. The only way your furry baby will be able to get rid of the seed is by surgically removing it. Hence, it is advisable to keep it out of your furry one’s reach. Sometimes, the avocado’s seed can be pretty big. If your furry one forgets that he is doing a task on an episode of Fear Factor, it could cause him to choke.

The pulp of avocado doesn’t have any properties that can be toxic for dogs. It is safe to feed the pulp to your doggo. But, before you do that, you must consult your veterinarian. Your veterinarian is well versed with your doggo’s nutritional needs and the functioning of their body. If your pooch has a sensitive digestive system, he or she can suffer from pancreatitis by consuming the smallest amount of avocado pulp. Pancreatitis is when the pancreas gets inflamed.

This human superfood can turn into a nightmare for your furry one’s health. If your furry one has consumed little avocado before and enjoys the taste, you can feed it to him or her in tiny portions and under your vet's guidance.

If you live in a household where avocado is a must-have or if your canine snatches things from the dining table, you must educate your family members about its ill effects on your furry baby. 

Prep a list of fruits and vegetables that your furry baby can and cannot consume as a sticky note for the fridge. There are plenty of options for your furry being if his/her diet requires a platter of fruits and veggies!
